Civil Engineering Consultancy
Dedicated to Flood Risk and Surface Water Management

-
Flood Risk Assessment (FRA)
For all flood zones
• FRAs in accordance with SSP7 (Scottish Planning Policy 7)
• Flood Consequences Assessments in accordance with TAN 15 (Technical Advice Note 15 Development and Flood Risk)
• Sequential Test
• Expert Evidence
See our other services for what we can include in your FRAs
Review of Flood Risks before you buying and selling
We cover all flood sources; fluvial, tidal, drainage, overland runoff, groundwater and coastal. We have many years experience in meeting tight planning deadlines and our reports are relevant and concise.
Experience of staff at Amazi includes all project/land types and locations.
-
Drainage
Review and design
• Design of proposed site drainage strategies
• Connection approvals
• High specification projects (airport, industrial etc)
• Runoff pollution control
• Runoff volume calculations
• How to comply with Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM
• Foul water strategies
• Problem solving for existing drainage
Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS)
• Permeable pavements
• Swales
• Soakaways (including arranging infiltration testing
• Site strategies etc
Building Drainage
• Gutter design of complex roof geometry and curved roofs
• Unusual gutters
• Green roofs
• Drainage around buildings
Previous experience of our staff includes; Ravenswood SUDS, Ipswich (CIRIA report 523 demonstration site, 2001) and well over 400 strategies to restrict site surface water runoff to obtain Environment Agency approval. We work on all types of site use, from 200 hectares to one property.
We specialise in difficult sites.
-
Negotiations with Authorities
• Sewage Undertakers
• Environment Agency
• Emergency planners and responders
• Drainage Authorities
• Internal Drainage Boards (IDBs)
• Advise on legislation regarding private sewers and connections
Dedicated to achieve results we are persistent with our negotiations whilst retaining good relations with the authorities. Recently a large development site, with no local watercourse, was refused permission to dispose of surface water via infiltration and to public sewer. Thorough knowledge of legislation and pragmatic negotiations obtained permission required for the drainage outfalls.
-
Hydrology
• Watercourse flow estimation in accordance with the Flood Estimation Handbook (FEH)
• Statistical
• Rainfall runoff (hydrographs)
• Catchment runoff
• Flood event analysis
• Site runoff
• Rainfall analysis
• Land drainage
Planning Policy mainly requires flow estimates for less frequent probabilities, eg 1 in 100 year return period (1% annual probability of exceedence), 1 in 200 and 1: 1,000 year. We may also assess more frequent events if an understanding of the extent and frequency of flooding needs to be known.
-
Hydraulic Assessment
• River modelling
• Analysis for highway and private ditches
• Review of existing hydraulic models
• are they properly representing local flooding?
• is the model relevant for your situation?
• Hydraulic structures
• Flood hazard modelling
• Defence overflow
• Defence breach modelling
• Wave and tide analysis
-
Flood Management
• Flood Management Plans
• Preparing for flooding
• Flood control and defence
• Building flood protection advice - for historic buildings
• Safety
• Emergency planners and responders
We believe in keeping people and property safe. We are also actively challenging government stance on 'what is safe' with regards to flood hazards. Current Environment Agency requirement is based upon the Flood Risks to People research. We believe that a better balance is necessary to avoid planning blight as experienced recently in areas such as Harwich and Tilbury.
Amazi staff have worked on the recent DEFRA project which considered data and equipment availability for emergency rescue during an east coast tidal flood event.

Training

• Flood management in UK
• Hydrology, hydraulics and drainage
